Niddrie is around 13 km to the north-west of Melbourne city centre, between Essendon North and Keilor East. The area was first settled in the nineteenth century, although most of its growth came during the twentieth. To the west of the suburb is Niddrie Lake, until 1975 a quarry from which basalt for local road building was mined. The attractive Steele Creek, and the reserve around it, runs through Niddrie until it joins the Maribyrnong River to the south.
