It seems funny to think that a few years back, the word ‘app’ didn’t even really exist. Not the long form as ‘application’ but the new abbreviated, techno-talk variant. Yet, in just a few short years, it has gone from being the preserve of techy types to being almost everywhere you turn. Every shop, company, sports team, idea or whatever you can think of, has now got an app you can download to your smart phone. Supposedly to make modern living that little bit more convenient. At least, that’s the thinking behind it. The reality is, that while some apps are indeed useful and worthwhile, the majority are a complete waste of time. To the point where in some cases you can’t even really see what the developer was thinking.

But, when a new technology takes hold, there’s no point telling people that they might be getting a little carried away. In a few years time, the app fad will be more subdued. The chaff will have been separated from the wheat, and only the useful and practical apps will remain. Sometimes it just takes a few years for the fad to run its course. In the meantime, you’ll have to put up with a few people who think that showing you an app that turns your face into that of a gerbil is what computers were invented for. Just smile and tell them how great it is, you don’t want to hurt their feelings.

The thing about apps is, that even the really useful ones are no substitute for doing something for real. You might be able to find a Jeep car service in Melbourne via an app but it’s only real experience that informs you if it is the right place for you. Of course, if it is a registered Jeep Melbourne dealer then you know you’re probably going to be ok, but an app probably isn’t going to be able to make that distinction. Some things in life can’t be done at the push of a button. And you know what, we think that’s a good thing.
