Some of us like stress. Sounds crazy? But, it's true. It might sound appealing to live in a stress-free world, but in reality a little stress gets the best out of us. And it's often the simple things that get our goat - odd, because we commonly handle very complicated work situations and get truly vexed at the minor incidental events. Now take away someone's freedom and you can guarantee they'll get stressed.
Recently inmates at the Fulham Correctional Centre in Sale, Victoria have been rioting. A group of around fifty prisoners, when asked to go back to their cells after having been out in the exercise yard, refused to move and instead staged a mini-riot on a roof. Even though they were landing themselves in deeper water, they still fought the system until most allowed themselves to be talked down. Crazy.
As far as we know, the prisoners had no particular gripe, and their prison is a modern one which (we assume) has reasonably comfortable conditions (as far as prison conditions ever can be comfortable, of course). So why riot? Prisoners who keep their noses clean tend to get out earlier, so why engage in a seemingly fruitless riot, which most participants gave up within hours of it beginning? Take away freedom and you create deep dissatisfaction.
Human brains are just not designed to cope with months or years without freedom. That, of course, is why prison is used as a punishment: it is a psychological punishment as much as a physical or practical one. While today's prisons are nothing like as harsh as those of times gone by, the very fact of being in a prison at all causes stress to the extent that brain damage can occur. This was taken to an extreme in 19th century Britain, where a particularly extreme prison system known as the 'Separate System' was trialled, involving almost total solitary confinement. The system became discredited and was ended as it sent so many mad (glad we don’t live in the 19th century).
'Do the crime, do the time', but it does seem clear that humans find being imprisoned extremely difficult to cope with mentally. Even those of us who are not in prison can start to feel extremely stressed if we feel trapped, even if our 'trap' is just our everyday lives of commuting and working.
Getting rid of that stress can be just as simple as getting out of town and enjoying a long drive. Whether on-the road or off it, getting completely away from our everyday lives for a day once in a while is essential. A Jeep SUV for sale in Melbourne could be the perfect car to enjoy those days. They are designed to be comfortable, powerful and most have some serious off-road capability, which gives you the ultimate freedom. Alternatives include the Dodge Nitro and Chrysler 300C Melbourne.
Of course, we're not saying that prison and the daily grind are comparable, or that a day out driving will cure all ills. However, what we do know is that a blast into the countryside exploring in a Jeep Melbourne can go a long way to making you feel free again. Let's drive!
