Mahatma Ghandi once said that 'freedom is never dear at any price, it is the breath of life'. Freedom is one of the most powerful words in the English language, and one of its most over-used. But what does it actually mean? Coming up with a definition of 'freedom' is not easy. It can simply mean 'freedom from', that is, not being a slave, or a prisoner, or otherwise having your freedom taken away. It can have a political definition, like the freedom Ghandi fought for in India. Or it could just mean the ability to make choices.

Everyone has things in life that they have to do, like going to work or putting out the rubbish. It's easy to get bogged down in those things, and to forget that there is more to life than obligation. We grow up believing that we can take on the world and be anything we want to be. And then reality creeps up and before we know what's happened, those beliefs and dreams are gone. Now, the things that we have to do won’t change, but we all need to find our own paths to feeling free.

Feeling that you have freedom is feeling that you have control. If your life is dictated by obligation and other people's expectations, then find yourself a way of having some of your own freedom. After all, if freedom is supposed to be a basic human right, isn't it time you got your fair share?
