January is a time of self-improvement like no other throughout the year. Networking involves trying to meet and impress potential employers or useful contacts in a social situation. The awkwardness arises from the fact that both parties know that this is happening. Of course, you could just take the view that all this pretending is just not worth the effort and that talent and self-belief will always win out in the end.

There is a school of thought that says it’s all about projection. Start acting and believing like you’ve earned a better job or a promotion, and it will come to you. This relies on creating the appearance of confidence, self-assuredness and success. From the clothes you’re wearing to the car you drive, to get noticed, everything has to be spot on. Turn up for work or a social event in a rusty old banger and you’ll be going nowhere, fast (or perhaps more accurately, slowly). But arrive in style in a Dodge Melbourne, Chrysler or Jeep Grand Cherokee Melbourne and people are going to sit up and take notice.

Fortunately, here in Australia, we’re a little bit more straight talking and up front than some other countries when it comes to networking. Most people would much rather have a conversation about your new car than discuss ‘effective business solutions’ or other such jargon (although there are the odd few).
