Time is a precious thing. No matter what we do, it passes. Minutes, hours, days, weeks and years seem to drift by without a chance to mark them. It never lets up. Never lets you catch your breath. Like swimming against the tide. All you can do is go with the current.

How to most wisely use time is where there is a schism of opinion. Some think that by doing things quickly they can save time. Others think that simply enjoying every minute, no matter what you’re doing, is the best way to make the most of our allotted hours. So which is best? Or does it entirely depend on personality and preference?

One of the best ways to summarise this difference is the choice we have between the scenic and the direct route. Using the journey from Melbourne to Adelaide as an example, would you choose the scenic Great Ocean Road or the direct A8? Would you rather arrive at your destination knowing you had saved the maximum amount of time possible? Or would you rather enjoy your time on the road, drinking in the sights and sounds on offer? It also depends on the car you’re driving. In a car as fun to drive as a pre-owned Jeep Wrangler from Melbourne, then the scenic route does seem to beckon. But if you have a Chrysler 300C Melbourne  or seven-seat Dodge Journey Melbourne, then travelling direct and in comfort seems to be the better option.

It would probably depend on how you felt about time at that moment. Our attitudes towards the great leveller change throughout our lives. It’s all relative. As Albert Einstein said: “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.”

Of course, they both have their advantages. The Great Ocean Road is one of the very best in the world. It has stunning scenery, incredible wildlife and picturesque towns to stop at. It’s a truly relaxing experience and one you won’t forget. But it is a long drive to Adelaide. The direct route is much faster. Almost twice as fast. Driveable in one day, so there’s no overnight stops. You could literally save a day. And that’s something not to be passed over lightly. Just think what you could do in a day? Or how happy you would be if you had an extra day off work?

There’s no clear answer. It really depends on how you feel about time. If you feel it slipping away (which we all do at some points in our life), then do you try and claw some back or do you relinquish your cares and just enjoy it for what it is?
